Trusted Choice's AIG Insurance Score

2 Stars awards AIG a final rating of 2 out of 5 stars. One of the only positives we can point out is the carrier’s long-standing status, as well as being one of the largest insurance carriers in the world, which clearly demonstrates AIG’s staying power. AIG also has strong financial stability and offers coverage to customers across the globe.

However, a huge volume of customer complaints about the carrier’s claim responses, overall coverage, and less-than-ideal website proves that AIG still has plenty of room to grow. More than 500 complaints filed against the carrier through the Better Business Bureau within recent years also prevents them from being one of our top picks. Many customer AIG insurance reviews found across multiple websites are also extremely negative.

Overall, we recommend working together with an independent insurance agent to find the coverage you need most from a reputable carrier that takes care of its customers. Perhaps you'll want to skip over looking into AIG entirely.

Today, AIG is one of the largest insurance carriers in the world.

AIG’s long-standing history and massive size have helped it to earn a reputation as a notably stable company. The carrier currently supplies coverage to more than 90 million customers across 80 different countries. AIG’s long-standing status and amount of in-force insurance aid the carrier’s reputation as a financially stable insurance provider. The “A” rating assures prospective customers that AIG is capable of offering coverage from a financially secure carrier.

Better Business Bureau

“Lennox Industries, the HVAC guys use this AGI for the warranty on their products. Both of these companies need to be reinvestigated as they are both in the business of ripping off the consumers! Can't even get into how bad these weasels are.”

Better Business Bureau

“I lost my phone Oct. 14, submitted a claim, and am still waiting. Their website says 2 days, people on phone say 2-5. Keep telling me they’ve escalated my claim (I have 90-year-old mother I need to be in contact with). None of the promised supervisors ever called back. ***** says nothing they can do. If/when I get a phone am canceling this policy."

Better Business Bureau

“If I could *** would be zero. They do NOT honor the Apple Theft and Loss Insurance. They make it until you cry and become frustrated. They promise responses in 1-2 days. They lie. 95% of the time do not respond or respond in error. They lie. From September 21 to October 13 no iPhone and no response even after calling them daily.”

Consumer Affairs

“I have had my life insurance with AIG since the nineties. This year they changed their online site and, since then, I have not been able to make an online payment at all. Have to call them to make a payment. Complained about it and was told they couldn’t do anything about it. Only thing that could do was make the payment over the phone. I have sent several secure messages but they have NOT even responded to any of my messages. I am VERY upset and Extremely disappointed with AIG.”

Consumer Affairs

“I have had nothing but trouble with this company since my original broker retired. I cannot get the company to assign me to a broker. I had to change my life insurance benefit because the company began renewing a rider I had for years every month. The premium was more and more each month, which ate up all my accumulated value. I ended up dropping the rider, thus losing 2/3 of my benefit in order to keep the base policy. I am a cancer patient, and as such, I cannot get any other insurance. When trying to communicate with the company, I have been run around for the last 2 days just trying to access the web portal to make my premium payment. This company does not value customer service, and it seems we (customers) are more of a burden to them than an asset."

AIG’s claims reporting hotline is available for customers in need via a toll-free phone number. Customers can also submit claims and file appropriate reports online through the website, or via mail or fax. Though the carrier does not make an official claims response timeframe promise on its website, customers have stated that they were quoted a processing time of 10 to 15 business days.

AIG offers a toll-free phone line for prospective and current customers to get in touch with them at slightly restricted hours, Monday through Friday. However, the carrier’s claims reporting department can be reached 24/7.

Though customers can report claims via phone, AIG encourages claims reporting through its website. Customers can file claims in three simple steps. Additional information about what documentation is needed for each specific type of insurance is listed on the carrier’s website. AIG customers can also check the status of their existing claims online, at any time.

Customers can file a claim, check their claim's status, pay their bill, update policy preferences such as changing beneficiaries, and learn what types of coverage are available through the official website. However, the carrier’s website is not the most intuitive to browse. The search option is often required for information that should be more readily available via dropdown menus, and even then, certain important information, such as claims processing timeframes, appears to be missing. As far as social media is concerned, the carrier does have a presence on both Facebook and Twitter to make itself more accessible to customers.
